Flat Knit Thick & Quick Toddler Hat- a beginner-friendly pattern for the coziest cold-weather hat!

This hat is shaped so it covers baby’s ears and the back of the neck. It’s knit on straight needles using super bulky yarn. This hat can easily be knit in an evening and it’s the perfect winter accessory!

Note- if you’re new to knitting, there are a few abbreviations in this pattern that you might not be familiar with.

SSK- means “slip, slip, knit”. Slip 1 st, slip the next, then put left needle back into the slipped sts and knit them together. This will create a decrease leaning to the left.

M1- means “make 1 stitch”. The make-one is performed in between two stitches, with the bar between the stitches. Lift this up and knit a new stitch.

Flat Knit Thick & Quick Toddler Hat

Yarn: Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in Barley (1 skein)

Needles: Size US 10 1/2 single point knitting needles

Also needed: markers, yarn needle, pom pom maker

Size: 2- 3 years

Cast on 60 sts.

Knit 3 rows in Garter Stitch.

Row 1: (right side) Knit 1. M1. K 9. SSK. Knit 2 together. Knit 9. M1. Knit 2. M1. Knit 3. SSK. K2tog. Knit 3. M1. Knit 2. M1. Knit 9. SSK. K2tog. Knit 9. M1. K1.

Row 2: Knit 1. Purl to last stitch. Knit 1.

Repeat these 2 rows until your work measures 3 1/2 inches from the cast on edge. End on a wrong side row.

Row 1: (right side) Knit 10. SSK. Place Marker. K2tog. Knit 14. SSK. Place Marker. K2tog. Knit 14. SSK. Place Marker. K2tog. Knit 10.

Row 2: K1. Purl to last st. K1.

Decrease:

Row 1: Knit to 2 sts before next marker. SSK. Slip marker. K2tog
3 times. Knit to end of row.

Row 2: K1. Purl to last st. K1.

Repeat the last 2 rows until 18 sts. remain.

Knit 2 sts together across row. (9 sts)

Break yarn, pull through remaining stitches and pull to tighten. Sew back seam. Make and attach pom pom.
