It’s easy to decorate wooden spoons into these festive holiday showpieces with a cutting machine and some sparkly adhesive vinyl!
Thanks to Expressions Vinyl for sponsoring this project! All ideas and opinions are my own.
Ok guys, before you ask why the heck I’m talking about holiday crafts when it’s not even Halloween yet, I’ll just leave this right here… Christmas is only 57 days away! I’m not suggesting we all deck the halls with all the Christmas decor just yet, but it’s never too soon to start working on Christmas crafts. I don’t know about you, but every year at the beginning of December, once the realization hits that Christmas actually is right around the corner, the Christmas crafting is the 1st thing that gets chucked from the list for lack of time. And that’s just sad, because it’s one of the most fun things about the holidays and actually helps reduce holiday stress, am I right?!
So the holiday crafting is underway over here!
Festive Christmas Sayings Wooden Spoons Tutorial
First up I made these fun and festive Christmas themed wooden spoons. They are the perfect Christmas craft because they’re quick and easy to make, just what you need in a craft at Christmas time! Some plain wooden utensils, paint and vinyl and they’re transformed into these Christmas cuties. I wish you could see this red adhesive vinyl in real life, the glitter is super fine which gives it the most beautiful, reflective and glistening effect… perfect for the holidays!
Supplies needed for Holiday Wooden Spoons
- Cricut or other cutting machine
- Design Space cut file
- Wood utensils
- White chalky finish paint
- Wide flat paint brush
- Painters tape
- Expressions Vinyl Flame Red Glitter Vinyl
- Transfer tape
Directions
Tape off the portion of the wooden spoon that you plan to paint and decorate. Make sure the tape is burnished well to the spoon to avoid paint leaking underneath.
Apply 2 coats of white chalk paint below the paint tape. Immediately after the final coat, gently peel back the painters tape. Allow to dry overnight.
Open my cut file in Design Space (or create your own in your cutting design machine software). Cut the phrases for the Christmas wooden spoons.
Weed the negative space surrounding the phrases. Apply transfer tape over the phrases that will go on the Christmas wooden utensils.
Tip: If you’re using a very fine font (like this one is), then I would recommend using just clear contact paper/shelf liner for transferring the vinyl… it isn’t as sticky as transfer tape so it will be easier to transfer the lettering onto the wood spoons.
Apply the transfer tape onto the Christmas spoons and press firmly around all of the letters. Slowly pull the transfer tape back, ensuring that the letters stay behind on the spoons. And that’s it! First simple, cute Christmas craft of the year, CHECK √.
Care and use of paint and vinyl wood spoons
Since most paints aren’t food safe, it’s best to keep the paint lower down the handle of the spoons. But really, aren’t they too cute to use anyway? If you do use them for food, hand wash them with mild dish detergent and avoid washing the painted handles unless they are sealed.
These Christmas wooden spoons would make such a cute hostess or holiday gift with a holiday towel or oven mitt, or even just tied in a bow because that’s all they really need. They would also add a perfect holiday touch on the kitchen counter in a utensil caddy. They can be easily customized in different vinyl colors or patterns for any holiday or occasion, or even just in everyday colors (like my painted ombre utensils) to use as year-round kitchen decor with some fun food puns.
