DIY Modern Concrete Candle Holder Tutorial

Supplies

Bowl for casting the candle holder

Clear plastic bag for mixing the concrete

A pair of scissors

Cera-mix or concrete mix and water

Candle Holder Spear

Marble Chips / alternative various coloured glass pieces (a hammer and a marble tile if you want to make your own marble chips)

Base for lantern (not pictured)

Safety Goggles (not pictured)

Step 1

Make your own marble chips by placing a tile inside a plastic bag or pillow case and use the hammer to break up the tile (remember to put on the safety goggles)

Step 2

Add water to the Quickcrete according to the manufacturer’s instruction in a plastic bag

Step 3

Cut off one of the corners of the plastic bag and now pour your concrete mix into the bowl

Step 4

Lightly shake the entire bowl to prevent an excessive amount of air bubbles as the concrete cures.

Just before the concrete cures, add marble chips so each piece are level with the surface and add a single or more candle holder spears.

Step 6

Once completely cure, remove the concrete piece from the bowl and place it on a lantern base (turned upside-down) and that’s it!

Quite alluring right? The assemblage of visually pleasing cold concrete, luxurious marble with a warm glow.

Add more candle spears and use it as an advent candle holder through the holiday and as an architectural statement year round.

  2. Construction needs to be good so get good materials for your building to assure good product and outcome.

  3. I love the look of this – so expensive and sleek. I can’t find the candle holder spears anywhere. Do you have a link for where you bought yours? Thanks for any help you can give.

  4. Hi Jules.

Thank you SO very much! So delighted that you’ve been inspired:-) I bought mine at the local florist, but I’ve got a few ideas you can try out:

I’ve made something similar but cutting off the foot of a thrift store candle holders.
2nd idea to try simply cast a copper or brass tube directly into the concrete.

Note you’ll need tape to secure both ideas, so the spear or tube won’t tilt.
Let me know if you’ve got further questions.
Happy crafting and thanks for being inspired:-)
    Mette
