DIY Expanding Foam Mirror – make a  playful statement

DIY Expanding Foam Mirror

If you’ve been following on Instagram you could see there’s been some hype about my PU Expanding Foam Mirror and today I’m going to share the tutorial.

So drawn by any reflecting design objects like mirrors, then you’re in for a treat today. MIrror are so versatile and I simply love that it can reflect the light, opening up space and generally enhancing the decor.

Tips! A few things to have in mind when decorating with mirrors.

Go big when decorating with a mirror in a small room. It creates the illusion of depth.

Make sure your mirror is reflecting something that’s worth looking at.

Group ornamental mirrors together to create an interesting wall sculpture.

Today I’m showing you the tutorial you can use to create your own wall mirror big or small, the size doesn’t really matter – and don’t stop here, apply this idea to other fun decorative objects.

So are you ready to create your own PU Statement Mirror? Let’s get started.

Mirror

Polyurethane (PU) expanding foam (get this at the hardware store)

Gloves (not pictured)

Paintbrush and paint I’ve used Sadolin paint samples (not pictured)

Tips!

Remember to protect your hands with gloves and plastic or cardboard to protect the working area. PU foam is very sticky/ messy and almost impossible to remove once it cures – therefore make this an outdoor project.

If you manage to get PU foam where you don’t want it to be? Don’t wipe it up, this will make the mess worse. Instead, let it harden completely and then scrape or sand it off.

Don’t overfill. The foam will expand nearly 3 times the initial volume extruded, you can always add an additional layer to make the “frame” wider.

Step 1.

Shake the can vigorously approx. 30 times to mix content. Screw on applicator nozzle onto the valve.

Step 2.

Hold can upside-down away from the face and start filling the outer edge of the mirror.

Step 3.

Set to dry, depending on your layer, temperature etc. the foam will be tack free after 30 minutes. Usually, I begin painting it when it’s possible to remove the object from the surface.

Step 4

Tip! Use a utility knife to ease the inner edge of the PU foam from the mirror, just an inch or so.

Step 5.

Now you can easily slip in a piece of paper or cardboard underneath the PU frame and cover up the mirror while you’re painting.

Tip! If you want to make your own Expanding Foam Vase, use a glass bottle or vase and cover it with PU foam.

And that’s it! Simply very easy but be sure to have my tips in mind to achieve your very own playful foam mirror.

DIY PU Mirror

I simply love the look of this upright mirror that isn’t really installed, but rather placed on the floor and resting against the wall. Ideal for any dressing room, entrance or simply a corner where you’d like some statement factor.

  4. Hej Mette.
